Have you ever felt like the world was stacked against you? You try so hard. You read your Bible. You pray. Maybe you even fast. You try to turn from sin, but it is like it is written into you, somewhere even deeper than your very DNA. Maybe there is a cycle. Maybe it needs to stop with you.
My great grandfather was a very high degree Freemason. Freemasons are cloaked in secrecy and ritual. Everything is about appearance. I did not choose to become a freemason… in fact, as a woman I never would have been invited. As a girl, and into my adulthood, I have struggled with feeling like I am inherently wrong. I have had a compulsion to lay my soul bare, confessing to anyone around me like they were my catholic priest, and yet I never felt like my sin was gone. No amount of praying or confessing helped. It was like there was a sin I didn’t know I had committed that disqualified me from God’s grace, disqualified me as his daughter, and made me a fraud. I over confessed and yet feared exposure for things I hadn’t even done. It caused all out panic attacks. It caused depression. There was a voice, a deep feeling in the pit of my stomach that said that no matter how thourally I confessed my sins to God, I was still evil, dirty, and disqualified deep down.
I have known these feelings for decades. I have run from them. I have prayed against them. I have stood them down. Little by little the battle has gotten easier. And then I did some research on Freemasons, and discovered that their descendants struggle with a feeling of being inherently wrong. There is was. Written out plain as day. I wasn’t the only one!
Spiritual fog and a hard time with prayer? Check.
Fear of being found out as being worthless? Check.
Fear of vulnerability? Check.
It was uncanny.
I love the way that God made us… we are beautifully woven together, spirit, soul, and body. For this reason psychology can so often serve as a tool to back up spiritual truths. In a 2025 Nature-Portfolio study on three generations of Syrian families, they discovered distinctive DNA methylation signatures tied to war violence. This included accelerated biological aging from inside the womb. Addiction risk is proven to run in families.
Nothing can change the sequence of your DNA. But your epigenetic pathways are changed from in the womb by generational strongholds, agreements, and trauma. An epigenetic pathway is a chemical “tag” that attaches to your DNA or to the proteins that your DNA is wrapped around. It does this through DNA methylation (where methyl is attached to your DNA and silences a gene) or through histone modification. Why does this matter? Your epigenetic pathways help your body to respond to stress, form memories, adapt to your environment, and regulate your hormones. Epigenetic tags can be passed to children… the scientific back up for what is happening spiritually. This affects stress sensitivity, and even metabolism. Epigenetic tags don’t alter your DNA, they alter the way you are able to express yourself. It’s like dimming your lights rather than rewiring the electricity. Your DNA is the piano, but the way it gets played is due to epigenetics.
This is a biological explanation for what we have known spiritually for thousands of years. Trauma, fear, iniquity patterns, agreements, demonic strongholds, family curses, anxiety patterns, anger cycles, and generational consequences echo across generations unless healing intervenes.
So many people say, “The cycle ends with me;” But we don’t have the power to heal these wounds on our own.
So how do we heal?
We confess our sins and resist the devil, and then he flees from us! We start by being very honest with God. There can be no making light of sin. No excuses. No compromise. As with everything with Jesus, this is hot or cold, black or white, all or nothing. Seek Holy Spirit. Maybe find a trusted friend or councelor who can seek with you in case you encounter resistance. Remember that these patterns and the spiritual forces associated with them have been in your family for generations. They aren’t going to leave without a fight. Name the patterns and the sins without making excuses. Remember that repentance means to turn away from your sin. You can’t get rid of sin and defend it at the same time. Confess the sins of the generations that came before you, just like Daniel did.
Once you have confessed, you renounce! Renounce it because it is not your identity in Christ! Plead the blood of Jesus over your family line, over yourself and your children. You are a child of God! That is your inheritance and your “right” to rewrite your history and your epigenetic pathways! “But to all who believed in him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.” John 1:12
“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you have received God’s spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, ‘Abba, Father.’ ” Romans 8:14-15
It is essential that you forgive your parents, and any ancestors who brought these strongholds into your life, knowingly or unknowingly. Forgiveness alone interrupts the epigenetic cycles, lowering stress reactivity. Forgiveness breaks the cycle.
There are some really great generational prayers out there. I found some that are specific to the agreements and curses that were brought to me through the freemasonry in my family line. This is generational warfare, and it is powerful!
You might need to do it more than once. No war is ever won in a single battle. But your enemy will get weaker, and you will get stronger with every battle. It is so exciting that we can truly be transformed from glory to glory, my friends! We can change our spiritual heritage and even our biology! There is hope!
